At the Fsas Technologies Summit 2026 in Munich, we had the opportunity to conduct this 4-minute interview with Alejandro Borallo, Head of Quantum Applications at Fujitsu, about the most important developments in the field of quantum computing.

What are the the differences and main strength of superconducting and diamond-spin technology in quantum computers?
Well, both technologies are very promising technologies, but their strong points are very different. For example, in superconducting technology. Well, superconducting technology is the most popular approach. The most mature one of the strong points of this technology is the speed. In this technology, the the operations can be done faster than in any other technology.
For example, in comparison with diamond sping, also the scalability of the system is very interesting. It’s easier compared with other technologies to scale up and to build chips with more qubits. Of course, at certain points, you have to scale up using multimodality, but it is easier to scale up in only one chip.
In diamond spin, the strong points are totally different. For example, the scalability in one module is more difficult, but it is easier to scale up in a multi modular approach. Also, the the operations are slower but these are much more stable qubits. The operations are much more accurate and the system is more stable.
There is a property which is called the coherence of the system. This is basically the time window in which you are able to keep stable the system. This is very important because a bigger coherence time means that you can implement more operations. So you can implement more elaborate algorithms and the diamond spin technology is very stable. The coherence time is very very high.
Also last but not least is interesting, that the temperature operation in this system is bigger than in superconducting machines. It works in the ordering of 4 to 8 Kelvin which is still cold but it is much easier to operate with this temperature and also the scalability is much easier than with extremely cold systems like the superconducting ones.

What is Quantum Inspired Computing and Quantum Emulation, and how does it relate to quantum computing?
So in Fujitsu apart from developing quantum hardware we work in different approaches that are not quantum per se but are very useful for the development of the quantum technologies ecosystem. For example we have our own emulation technology.
A quantum emulation, a quantum emulator is a supercomput that reproduce the behavior of a quantum computer. This is very important because the price of quantum technologies is quite high of the moment and the entry barrier is quite high. So with this quantum emulation technologies we can allow research centers, universities, also companies to start working quantum computers without direct access to quantum computers.
Also is very important the quantum inspire technology. We have our own solution which is called digital annealer. Digital annealer is a quantum inspired technology that means that the hardware is classical but the algorithm, the heuristics is built based or inspired in quantum technology. This technology is very important because the way the mathematical models are formulated in this technology is equivalent to the way in which formulate optimization problems in quantum computing. So we can start working developing problems using this technology which is quite mature and we can, once the quantum computers are ready to migrate, the models that we have developed using digital annaeler to a real quantum computer.
